Overview

The Slate Hammer is a durable, injection-molded polymer pot call perfect for those working in difficult terrain where a call may be damaged. At an economical price point, this call is perfect for beginners but has a robust sound range of yelp, clucks, cuts, and purrs that any hunter would be happy to have in the turkey woods.  Condition the striking surface as needed using the included scouring pad to get your preferred sounds. To learn the basics, read our listed techniques below.

Specifications

  • Call type: Pot call
  • Surface: Slate
  • Pot Material: Polymer
  • Striker Material: Hickory
  • Includes scouring pad
  • Handmade in the U.S.A.

TECHNIQUE:

For the best results:

  1. Make sure the call is appropriately conditioned with the included scouring pad.
  2. Hold the call away from your body; cup it between your index finger and thumb.
  3. Hold the striker like a pencil at a 70-degree angle to call; rest your other fingers solidly against the call.
  4. Apply light pressure from the striker when calling.

For the most consistent pitches and tone, use the upper third of the call. The center of the call produces deeper tones.

  • Cackle: Move striker in straight, quick, ¼" lines, 7 to 10 times.
  • Cluck: Move striker very quickly in straight, ¼" lines using popping motion.
  • Cut: Move striker very quickly in straight, ¼" lines with broken rhythm (ex. 3 notes, 2 notes, 4 notes).
  • Purr: Slowly slide striker in a straight, 1" line across surface. Hold striker higher for more consistent sound. Use scouring pad to create additional friction as needed.
  • Yelp: Move striker in a short oval or circular motion in ½" lines, producing a two-tone yelp, 5 to 7 times in each sequence.

The "Land Between The Lakes" is a a national recreation area right next to Cadiz, Kentucky - the birthplace of Knight & Hale. It's where Harold and David began their hunting careers as children and formed them into the men and hunters they ultimately became. The calls in this series are durable, rugged, and yet smooth enough to bear this name that hits so close to home.
