Many Turkey Hunters Favor Mouth Diaphragm Calls
Many turkey hunters favor mouth diaphragm calls because these calls are capable of producing sweet turkey talk while leaving the hunter's hands free. But, diaphragms are tough to learn to use properly. It takes a lot of practice to produce realistic turkey calls. Simplify the process by first determining your skill level. If you've never used a diaphragm call, classify yourself as a 1. If you're capable of using a diaphragm call but would like to improve, you're a 2. Experienced callers are 3s. Turkey callers ranked as 1s should begin their calling careers with an easy-to-use single- or double-reed call. Level 2 callers should select a good double- or triple-reed call that features a split or cut in the latex reed. (These alterations in the latex create a more raspy and realistic call, but also make them a little more difficult to learn to blow.) Level 3 callers can select from a wide variety of mouth diaphragms, from 4-reed calls to ones with special cuts. Once the call has been selected, seek help learning the tricks of the call from advanced callers or video instruction.
