The Knight and Hale Story...
From a meager beginning more than 25 years ago, in a basement workshop, Knight & Hale Game Calls has risen to the forefront as one of the leading and most innovative game-call companies in the business. Nineteen ninety-seven marked the 25th anniversary for the company and its founders Harold Knight and David Hale.
For 12 years, these two men built the business of making and selling game calls after their regular working hours. Harold was a barber in his hometown of Cadiz, Kentucky. David was a farmer in the adjacent county before leaving his career in 1984 to go into the game call business full time. It was at this time that Harold and David both devoted their full attention to Knight & Hale Game Calls.
During the course of the next 25 years, these two unassuming gentlemen invented so many new calling concepts that they soon became known nationwide as “innovators.” Many of their popular calls were trademarked and some patented. A tube goose call made from a hollow pipe with a latex reed stretched over it became the rage in the mid-seventies. This call won the world calling championship on three different occasions. Then came the Double Clucker®, another revolutionary goose call concept. With the potential to sound while inhaling or exhaling from the same end, hunters were able to more accurately reproduce the calls of their quarry. Using this same inhale-exhale concept, David and Harold developed and patented a deer call that would propel Knight & Hale Game Calls to virtual household-name status. Today their patented EZ-Grunt-er® deer call is the only call on the market with the ability to make the hyperventilating grunt sound of a rutting buck.
In the early 90’s, the company achieved national acclaim again when Harold and David developed a set of calls that imitated the sound of two fighting gobblers. They called it the “Fighting Purr System®.”
Through Harold’s and David’s aggressive promotion and outgoing personalities, Knight and Hale enjoyed its share of time in the limelight. With David and Harold’s ability to create effective products and promote them on a national basis in magazine, newspaper articles and television shows, their company grew dramatically—and so did their ideas. With a new awareness of the capabilities of mass-media communication, David and Harold realized it was time to take their hunting message to the air waves and start their own national television show. These bearded, backwoods buddies can be seen nationwide on “Woods & Wetlands” television show, now in its eighth season.
Ultimately Harold and David have been responsible for coining such terms as “shock gobbling,” “hyperventilating,” “double clucking” and “fighting purr.” Each of these phrases describes something turkeys, geese and deer do or say in their own language. Through years of experience and observation in the field of wild creatures’ behavior and lifestyles, and their own abilities to understand and interpret the meanings, David and Harold have conceived, created and in turn provided substantial contributions to game calling and the sport of hunting. Many of their concepts have been copied by other companies, extending their considerable influence. But David and Harold’s primary concerns are to help hunters be more successful through the application of their products and techniques and at the same time foster a greater respect for the sport and the wildlife that every hunter pursues.
