Turkey Hunting in Wellman, IA

 A double with bows!

I took a friend of mine hunting in search of his first turkey. We pumped the difficulty level up and took our bows.

We got set up about a half hour before first light. We were graced with no less then 4 toms and their thundering gobbles inside 100 yards of our location. John and I settled in for a great morning. We called the the gobblers off and on most of the morning. The call that John was using, a Knight & Hale Yella Hammer, was the ticket. When the gobblers had pretty much stopped John started working on them with the Yella Hammer. They would routinely respond.

After about 2 hours of this cat and mouse game I looked out into the picked been field that we were in and saw 3 turkeys walking across the field about 600 yards from our position. John and I called a bit more. John could not really see them. I told him to get his bow ready. "Why" was the response I got from John. I explained that they had see the Pretty Boy and they are on a dead run. These turkeys covered 300 yards in about a minute. They got right to the decoys and John brought his Mathews to full draw. He shot the lead Jake at about 10 yards. It was a great shot. The Jake walked out to about 50 yards and fell over, at which time one of the other jakes jumped on top of him and began beating the heck out of him. I decided to try a shot. My first arrow fell just short. John told me to shoot again. After some prodding I decided to try another shot. I bumped my sight up a bit and let another Easton ACC and Rocket Steelhead fly. At 55 yards my arrow found it's mark.

It was a wonderful day. A double with bows! None of which would have happened without Knight and Hale calls and Carry Lite's Pretty Boy. The turkeys cannot stand that decoy.
