You Can Tell When a Bird is Eager
David Hale of Knight & Hale Game Calls fame says that many hunters spend valuable time chasing after a gobbler that has no intention of coming to a call. "I might get a dozen responses from birds before heading out for one," he said. "So many guys stop the truck and shock gobble, and if a turkey answers they head out after that bird. I don't do that. I wait for one that shows aggressiveness - one that really responds to each shock gobble. You can tell when a bird is eager and when it's not. You get a bird that's answering you before you finish your shock gobble, and that's the bird you want." Hale uses several calls to get a gobbler to respond, but one of his favorite is the Shock Gobble Owl Call. He also uses a Screamin' Hawk call, and during the mid part of the day, he says a Magnum Crow Call gets toms to gobble without spooking.
