Knight & Hale Simplifies Turkey Diaphragm Calls
Spend much time around accomplished turkey callers, and no doubt you’ll be amazed by the realistic, natural-sounding turkey talk that can be produced with nothing more than a diaphragm call. Hunters and callers like Turkey Calling World Champions Chris Parrish work turkey diaphragms like Eddie Van Halen plays guitar, but despite the sweet music these virtuosos make with diaphragm calls, these pieces of plastic and latex can be downright confusing and frustrating.
Even some accomplished turkey hunters find diaphragms confusing, which is why Knight & Hale is helping clear the air with a new system that allows hunters to quickly and easily identify the call they need, no matter their level of experience.
Knight & Hale Game Calls categorizes its diaphragm calls into three levels: Level 1 is for beginners who’ve never tried a diaphragm, Level 2 is the step up in complexity and sound callers take after mastering a Level 1 call, and Level 3 is for the most advanced caller. Callers purchasing Level 3 diaphragms should have already mastered Level 1 and Level 2 calls.
One important fact about turkey diaphragm calls: They require more practice to master than other types of calls. Nearly no one can just pop a diaphragm call into his or her mouth and produce perfect calls. It just takes practice. Pick the right diaphragm for your skill level, then practice, practice, practice.
Level 1
For the beginning caller, these diaphragms are easy to blow and produce good volume. The straight-edged single, double and triple reed diaphragms are the easiest to learn. The more reeds a call features, the more air it takes to produce the desired result, therefore the more difficult it is to learn to use. Excellent Level 1 calls include the Ole Reliable Double Reed, the Screaming Hen II and the Purr-r-r-fect Diaphragm.
Level 2
These calls are a little more difficult to blow than Level 1 calls. These calls produce a medium-raspy sound, and are the best step up after Level 1 calls are mastered. Knight & Hale Double Split, Double V and Triple V Diaphragms are excellent Level 2 calls.
Level 3
Most of Knight & Hale’s Level 3 calls consist of three and four reeds and special cuts, which can make them tough to learn to blow, but the results are certainly worth the time it takes to practice. Callers should be proficient with Level 2 calls before learning one of these advanced calls. Great Level 3 calls include the Knight & Hale SetBak Three Reed, the 3.5 Reed Wedge and the Screaming Hen IV Four Reed.
